Living Better in San Diego

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
With Maria Olson and Chris Meacham

8/30/2009

A non-profit donor-supported organization, the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis, and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

Currently, some 10 million people (or about one in seven Americans) are silent carriers of this defective gene. Advances in research and medical treatments, funded primarily by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, have enhanced and extended the lives for children and adults with Cystic Fibrosis, or C.F. for short.

When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation began in 1955, few children with Cystic Fibrosis lived to attend elementary school, but thanks to research and care, the median survival or a person with Cystic Fibrosis is now almost 38 years. Still, despite these advancements, there is no cure for C.F., and young people continue lose their battles to this progressive and fatal disease as early as their teens.
